MANILA -- The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 4,393 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Southeast Asian country on Tuesday, bringing the total tally to 2,765,672.

The DOH also reported that 135 more people died from the pandemic, bringing the coronavirus death toll to 42,077. (Philippines-COVID 19)

TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tuesday he has asked a government economic policy panel to prepare "urgent proposals" by early November to enrich his signature "new capitalism" vision.

The proposals will include promoting advanced technology for digitalization and de-carbonization, as well as economic security issues including ensuring semiconductor supplies as "top priorities," Kishida said at the end of the panel's first meeting. (Japan-Gov't Panel-Economic Proposals)

MALE -- Over 100,000 tourists have visited the Maldives in the month of October, the state-owned PSM News citing data from the Ministry of Tourism reported here Tuesday.

Tourism ministry data showed that 102,434 tourists visited the Maldives from Oct. 1 to 24, a 599 percent increase from the same period in 2020 but a 2 percent decrease compared to 2019. (Maldives-Tourism-October)

TOKYO -- Japan on Tuesday launched a new satellite into orbit to replace the aging first quasi-zenith satellite, which has been providing accurate global positioning data for services such as autonomous driving cars and flying drones.

The new satellite, loaded in an H-2A rocket, was launched at 11:19 a.m. local time Tuesday from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan. (Japan-New Satellite-GPS)
