No. 6 seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain blew past No. 8 seed Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-0 on Saturday to reach the final of the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne.
Muguruza will face a well-rested Australian Ashleigh Barty -- the top seed and World No. 1 -- in Sunday's championship match. Barty advanced by walkover following the withdrawal by Serena Williams after her quarterfinal match.
Barty, who is trying for her ninth career WTA singles title, owns a 2-1 career edge against Muguruza.
Unseeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia and seventh-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium will meet in the Gippsland Trophy final after advancing in very different fashions in the semifinals.
Kanepi outlasted No. 9 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 6-3, 7-6 (6), while Mertens enjoyed a walkover against second-seeded Naomi Osaka of Japan. Osaka cited a nagging injury and her readiness for the upcoming Australian Open in her decision.
Mertens and Kanepi have split a pair of meetings, with Mertens winning the most recent match in the round of 64 at the 2020 French Open.
Unseeded American Ann Li defeated Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals of the Grampians Trophy event in Melbourne.
Li will face fellow American Jennifer Brady in that semifinal after No. 7 Brady beat Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (5), 6-4 in their quarterfinal match.
The other semifinal will pit No. 5 Maria Sakkari of Greece against No. 6 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia. Kontavelt won in walkover against No. 3 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, while Sakkari held off No. 8 Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-4, 6-2.
