BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TBILISI -- Georgia reported 227 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing its national total to 4,140, the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health said.

Of the new cases, 165 were confirmed in the western Adjara region, said the center.

SOFIA -- The Bulgarian government on Wednesday approved the extension of the nationwide epidemic emergency until Nov. 30 in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19, the cabinet said in a statement.

The epidemic emergency was initially declared on May 14 with a duration of one month, replacing the state of emergency implemented on March 13. It has already been extended several times, with the last extension to the end of September.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait on Wednesday reported 616 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 101,299 and the death toll to 590, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Currently, 8,368 patients are receiving treatment, including 101 in ICU, according to the statement.

BUDAPEST -- Hungary registered 951 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, raising the total cases of the country to 20,450, according to the government's coronavirus information website.

There are 558 COVID-19 patients being treated in hospital at present, 35 of whom are on ventilators. To date, there have been 4,644 recoveries and 702 fatalities.

TOKYO -- Japan's Fujifilm Holdings Corp. said on Wednesday that it has confirmed the efficacy of anti-flu drug Avigan in treating COVID-19 patients and will seek government approval as early as next month for using the drug.

Avigan, also known as favipiravir, was developed by Fujifilm Toyama Chemical, a subsidiary of Fujifilm Holdings.

BEIJING -- The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Wednesday conferred the title of "role model of the times" on 10 frontline medical assistance teams in recognition of their outstanding contributions in China's fight against COVID-19.

Huang Kunming, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the ceremony and presented medals and certificates to the recipients.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 6,431 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its national total to 1,122,241, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement Wednesday.

Meanwhile, 150 new deaths were reported, taking the death toll to 19,799, it said.
