The latest iteration of the Honda CR-V has been around in the US since 2017 but thanks to the increased competition, the Japanese automaker has felt the need to update its popular crossover on a regular basis. A fleet of mildly camouflaged prototypes of 2020 Honda CR-V has been photographed up close in the US.

The brisk selling crossover receives a minor nip and tuck and there is nothing on the exterior to suggest extensive modification. For starters, there is hardly any change in the profile. The front fascia gets a bolder chrome element on the grille and a subtly revised bumper.

The rear fascia too remains more or less the same save for the rear diffuser and new hexagonal exhaust tips. While there are no details about the interior yet, we don't have a reason to expect any drastic changes to the design.

If at all there is anything new on the inside, it would be an upgraded infotainment system with improved connectivity. The US-spec crossover is likely to receive more ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) features to counteract the new arrivals in this segment.

The powertrain lineup for the US market consists of a naturally aspirated 2.4 liter and turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol engines. The former delivers 184 hp while the latter is good for 190 hp. Both engines employ a CVT as standard transmission option. The CR-V is available in both FWD and AWD configurations. Honda is likely to use the facelift opportunity to introduce a new hybrid powertrain in the US market. The Europe-spec model already offers it.

Before the SUV frenzy took over, the Honda CR-V was once the world's best selling SUV but competition has got intense manifold in the last few years. While the soft-roader is still popular in most of the markets it caters to, it is imperative for Honda to dish out regular technology upgrades to keep its appeal.

The 2020 Honda CR-V is expected to make its sales debut in the United States later this year. The styling update is expected to reach Europe roughly at the same time. India is likely to receive the updated model a few months down the line.
