City gov't honors WWII veterans

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, June 26 (PIA)--The city government here honored 13 World War II veterans who fought for the liberation of Tuguegarao during the imperial Japanese occupation in 1945.

During the commemoration of the city's Liberation Day on Tuesday (June 25, 2019), local officials in partnership with the Veterans Federation of Tuguegarao City, recognized the heroism of Domiciano Barias, Andres Arugay, Ceferino Damil, Eladio Macraniag, Cesar Pobre, Celedino Macarubbo, Froilan Calagui, Jose Queman, Antonio Ballad, Basillo Ballad, Eutiquio Ballad, Fortunato Tuliao and Felix Damil. Families of the deceased veterans were present during the event.

Of the 13 identified World War II veterans from Tuguegarao City, Feliz Carag Damil, 97, is the lone surviving veteran who was awarded with Plaque of Recognition.

Mayor Jefferson P. Soriano said it is very important to recognize the efforts and heroism of the city's freedom fighters. "In giving importance to their sacrifices and bravery, we must fight our own war against poverty, environmental destruction, criminality and illegal drugs," he said.

"Let us not forget the blood and tears shed by our fellow Tuguegaraoenos to gain the freedom we have now. Let us not put their sacrifices in vain. Let us prove to them that we are worth their sacrifice," Soriano said.

The celebration included flag raising ceremony, 21-gun salute and wreath-laying at the Heroes Monument.

Soriano further vowed to lead the commemoration of the city's Liberation day annually, in partnership with the Veterans Federation, together with the veterans' families and various organizations.

Rodolfo Brillantes, Veterans Federation past president, expressed his gratitude to the city government's initiative in acknowledging significant contributions of war veterans to freedom which now being enjoyed by the people of Tuguegarao.

Brillantes is optimistic that the city government will continue to support the programs and advocacies of the veterans to remind the youth on the importance of the sacrifices and contributions of World War II heroes. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
